Maria had another appointment at the hospital today about her glue ear, during which she received the good news that only one ear is slightly gluey and that the holes from her grommet operation two years ago had now completely closed up. We bought ourselves some jelly beans to celebrate and just as we were getting back into the car with sticky fingers and gungey teeth she turned to me and said, ‘Mummy, I’m going to be six soon and when I’m seven I’m going to Heaven’. I almost stopped dead in my tracks and a maelstrom of thoughts started whirling around my head all highlighted by the fact that we were still standing in a hospital car park.
Very calmly I said ‘Why Heaven sweetie?’ to which she replied, ‘Because it rhymes’. I gave a huge mental sigh of relief and added ‘I’m sure Heaven is a lovely place darling, but once you go there you never come back and I really wouldn’t want you to go there for a very, very long time as I would miss you and be so sad’ to which she replied, ‘OK Mummy, when I’m seven I’ll go to Devon instead’.
I held her hand very tightly all the way home.
